• Dog Bag Box Installed!
  Take a Bag - Bring a Bag
•  Thanks to Friends' 'handyman' Tim, the Dog Park now has a Dog Bag Box designed to help us reduce the expense of purchasing special poop bags for the dispensers and to be more 'green'.  Park users are asked to take a bag from the box on their way into the park for use in poop scooping.  On your next visit to the park, please bring some plastic grocery bags to donate to the box.  Clean bags in good condition, please.  Please DO NOT place 'used or full' bags or trash in this box!  Thanks for your help and support.

 

• Shed Donors Recognized
  Local Businesses Contribute to Purchase
  The Dog Park had its very own shed installed this past fall, thanks to generous donations by several local businesses. Their donations have now been recognized through the installation of a lovely plaque, recently installed on the side of the shed.  Thanks!

• Friends Committee Meets
  Planning future Friends efforts
  The Friends of Shelton Dog Park meets the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Shelton Recreation Center.  If you would like to join us as we plan future Friends efforts, please join us at a Friends meeting!  ***NOTE: The next meeting takes place on May 17th, 2012.

• Wood Carver Gone to the Dogs
  Local Wood Carver Gives Stump a Face Lift
  Local wood carver Tim Bonney has transformed  a tree stump on the property into a dog carving.  The tree had to be taken down recently, leaving a 5' high stump right on the corner of the property.  We now have a lovely wood carving of a dog sitting and welcoming all park users.  Thanks, Tim!  Tim is available for carving commissions.  He can be reached at woodcarvings.tim@gmail.com  Visit his website to see pictures of his other work.

Park Guidance

There are signs at the park detailing the basic park rules.  They are listed below:

1. All dogs must be properly licensed and vaccinated.
2. Owners must comply with all state and local regulations.
3. Maximum of three dogs per owner.
4. Owners are responsible for their dogs behavior.
5. Aggressive dogs and dogs in heat are not allowed.
6. Dogs must be on a leash until they are in the fenced area of the park.
7. Owners must clean up after their dogs and repair any holes that are dug.
8. Children must be supervised at all times.
9. Use the park at your own risk.
10. Please do not allow your dog to bark excessively.
11. Please do not bring dogs with contagious diseases to the park.

Park Pointers

Here are some additional pointers to good park etiquette and safety, which will ensure an enjoyable experience for all park users and neighbors:

• Pay attention to your dog's behavior.  If he is barking non-stop then he is feeling stressed and uncomfortable.  If reassuring him doesn't work, and he continues to bark, please take him home.  He will feel relieved, and other park users and neighbors will appreciate a quieter park
  experience.
• For the health of all our canine park users, please don't bring your dog to the park if he has a contagious condition.  Some of the most common ones include: giardia, coccidia, worms, sarcoptic mange, distemper, kennel cough and canine flu.
• Do you have a dominant dog?  Please monitor his behavior with the other dogs in the park.  If he is attempting to mount them, is barking and growling in a menacing way, or is otherwise harassing them, please reign him in and work with him on good playground manners.
• Standing water is a breeding ground for all kinds of bugs, which can transmit disease. Don't allow your dog to drink from a water bowl at the park, unless the water is fresh. If you pour water into one of the bowls at the park for your dog to take a drink, please dump out the water once he has done so.  Thanks!
• Please supervise your dog at all times while he is in the park.  The only way to make the park a safe and enjoyable place for all dogs is to ensure that each owner supervises his dog's behavior (and picks up his poop) at all times. It is OK to socialize with the other humans, but please keep an eye on your dog at the same time.  Please don't bring a book, knitting, etc. to distract you while your dog roams unsupervised. 
• Please DO NOT dispose of cigarette butts on the ground anywhere on the park premises.  Cigarette butts contain substances that are toxic to dogs.  Additionally, the filters can cause intestinal blockages which require major surgery.

Information Kiosk

We now have an information kiosk at the Dog Park, thanks to Jake Johnson and the other Boy Scouts of Pack 27, based here in Shelton.  Thanks guys!

The kiosk features a full list of park guidelines and pointers, as well as information concerning upcoming park events sponsored by the Friends of Shelton Dog Park.  There is a limited amount of space for posting information regarding not-for-profit dog-related events.

To post information about your not-for-profit event or lost dog, please drop off a flier at Shelton Parks and Recreation.  Then call Mandy at (203) 922-2643 to let her know it is there.  She will collect and post approved fliers, as space is available. 

PLEASE NOTE:

• No commercial or business advertising is allowed on the information kiosk, park fencing, entryway, etc. It is illegal to post commercial or business advertising on city property.  Businesses may have a named presence at the park by sponsoring a bench, picnic table, event, etc.  Please contact us for details.
• Please do not post fliers, business cards, etc. on the kiosk yourself.  They will be removed.  All fliers must first be approved by the Dog Park Committee and properly posted inside the kiosk.
